Why It Smells Fishy
  • Silicone and Coatings: The silicone heating wrap and internal components often release a strong, fishy or burnt-plastic odor when first heated.
  • Breaking In: According to crafter feedback, this smell typically fades completely after 50 to 100 uses as the machine finishes breaking in.
  • Electrical Heat: Similar to overheating plastics in new appliances, the high heat needed for sublimation (around 380°F–400°F) activates these harmless initial manufacturing odors.
  • How to Fix and Prevent the Odor
  • Use Good Ventilation: Always operate your tumbler press in a well-ventilated room, near an open window, or run it outside in a garage/porch until the break-in period passes.
  • Run Burn-In Cycles: Turn the empty press on to its normal operating temperature and let it run in a ventilated space for a cycle or two to speed up the off-gassing of new parts.
  • Check the Plug and Outlet: Ensure the power cord is screwed in tightly and the wall outlet isn't showing signs of severe electrical overheating (which can also smell fishy if wiring is strained).
